What is the best way to choose a real estate agent?
I’ve been looking at various Agents’ websites, but it still seems something that I need to research more and more. Is it acceptable to meet with different Agents, just once, to see if they are a good match?

After you go through the websites (and don’t forget to analyze their listings), see if they have any open houses coming up and go to them even if you aren’t particularly interested in the house. That way, you in a no pressure environment where you can get a feel for their experience and ability to teach you the ins and outs of real estate. It is fine to meet with multiple agents before you sign a contract with them and they shouldn’t be pressuring you too much.
Our agent is great (and patient) and met with us a few times before we signed with her. I feel like I could almost take the Real Estate exam after working with her. She has been very patient with us while we were making our decision to move or not and finding the right house.
BTW, if you are in the Harford/Baltimore Co. area, our agent is Jennifer Quinn with Prudential Carruthers (http://jennifer.quinn.pcragent.com).

You should interview an agent as you would if you were going to hire an employee to work for you….after all that is exactly what you are doing. Here are some things to look for in a top agent:
1. Experience – how long have they been in the business & are they full time? Many agents do not last in the real estate field for more than a year or two. Also, how many transactions have they closed in the past year? What types of transactions have they closed? Are they experienced with short sales and distressed properties? That is our current market.
2. Have they taken the time to get a real estate designation? Have they make the commitment to continue their education to better help their clients? The CRS designation is one of the top real estate designations given to realtors who demonstrate a high level of accomplished sales and extensive education.
3. Will my realtor listen to my needs and wants? A good realtor will conduct a buyer consultation to fully understand your needs.
4. Do they have references from past clients and how many?
5. Are they a non pressure type of realtor looking out for your needs or are they simply looking for a commission?
6. Are they well versed in any other aspect of the real estate field ie real estate appraisal or mortgage financing?
7. Will they take the time to discuss the real estate process with you up front and answer all your questions about the process BEFORE you look for homes?
Finding your new home is a process and it’s a relationship with your realtor. Make it a good one and have a good experience.
